Unveiling the Silent Struggle: Navigating the Unseen Realities of Spinal Injuries
Abstract
Beyond the wheelchair lies a world of potential, where those with spinal injuries redefine what it means to live life to the fullest
In the intricate tapestry of human health, the spine stands as an unsung hero, a guardian of mobility and an architectural masterpiece supporting the edifice of our bodies. Yet, when the threads of this delicate structure are frayed by fate, the consequences are far-reaching and life-altering. Today, we delve into the compelling realm of spinal injuries, a domain where silent battles unfold, leaving indelible imprints on the lives of those affected.
The World Health Organization (WHO) estimates that globally, around 250,000 to 500,000 people suffer spinal cord injuries every year. The incidence rates vary significantly by region. Factors such as road safety, healthcare infrastructure, and preventive measures influence these variances. Motor vehicle accidents, falls, violence, and sports injuries are among the leading causes of spinal cord injuries globally. In conflict zones bullet injuries also add to the list. Young adults are more susceptible to spinal injuries, with a higher prevalence among males than females. Spinal injuries often pose additional challenges in developing countries due to limited access to healthcare, rehabilitation, and preventative measures.1-3
